ORC Spring 2023 Week 8!

ORC Week 8

The Big Reveal!!

It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! I finally get to show you the reveal of Jaxson’s nursery! I’m so excited with how it turned out and love every moment in here.

If you’re new here, for the last 8 weeks we’ve been participating in the #OneRoomChallenge re-designing our baby boy’s builder basic bedroom into an amazing nursery. Below is how we started with greige walls and a blank canvas. Plenty of room for inspiration and improvement!

Nursery room before

In Week 1 we skim coated the walls to get a smooth texture. Week 2 we moved onto installing the board and batten. Week 3 we primed and painted our base colors and started on the buffalo check wall pattern. Week 4 Bob Ross came to help us paint clouds on the ceiling. Week 5-6 we learned the ins and outs of installing crown molding while adding special lighting treatments. Week 6-7 we focused on furniture and waited for our final touches to arrive. Which brings us to week 8: The BIG Show–THE REVEAL!!!

With the new paint on the wall it took this room from drab to fab with more light reflecting off of the white walls. We used Behr Polar Behr white in a semigloss sheen to get that high reflective value. The ceiling was a sky blue also by Behr with a variety of soft accent colors to paint the clouds. We have a whole blog post on how to do the buffalo check here. For our furniture, we used a black Target convertible crib that brings a little more modern mid-century look into the place that makes it feel a bit more upscale. We are waiting for the West Elm x Pottery Barn mid-century changing table and dresser coming next week that will continue with the slightly more modern vibe in the room. To add a some color variation in the room we added a cute colored polka dot rug from Target that Jaxson absolutely loves. The color mimics some of the colors in the clouds on the ceiling and helps to round out the space. We have another one coming this week that we’ll use carpet tape to join them together to create a larger impact on the floor.

As you come into the room there is a large wall that needed to be its own special moment and I knew I wanted it to be a gathering and play space for Jaxson. Instead of my original plan to build a bench, I found these great outdoor modular pillows from Business & Pleasure that were the perfect solution for seating and play. They are comfortable, meant for the outdoors (read can stand up to kids), and a perfect addition to the space. The boys play with them all of the time and sit on them to read.

To really carve out the space, I bought 4 of these acrylic bookshelves that are very sturdy (cue kids grabbing the corners to reach a book) and make it easy for them to see the books to pick out the one they want. I had planned to build picture ledge bookshelves, but when I saw the acrylic options, I knew it was the better look for the space and together, they make the perfect visual frame around the reading area.

They blend into the wall instead of obscuring that beautiful board and batten. To install them, Jake used some leftover MDF to reinforce the back sides for the screws to go into when they spanned the space in between two battens. Once installed, we loaded in some books and Lucas helped us arrange them how he thought they should go ;) Add in some outdoor poufs I found at Home Depot and a cute yellow Jaxson sized chair from Pottery Barn Kids and we have the perfect reading and play space for him. His smile is so big playing in this area.

Meanwhile, I’ve have a collection of professional family photos that were the perfect addition to this space in white frames I bought from Target. Add in some decor and custom wall art I designed (water color, graphic poster, and hand painted letters) and we were nearly done.

We still have a custom window covering to do, but the fabric from Kerri Rosenthal just arrived and I need to get supplies to really bring this life. I’m so excited with the look of it and can’t wait to share another blog post when it’s done.

In the meantime, I’m really happy. I mean really, really, happy with how this room feels. It’s like a little ray of morning sunshine when I open the door and it just makes me smile. Just like how I feel when I’m around Jaxson!
